However, it is also possible to make costly mistakes during the pallet shipping process. Using the Wrong Kind of Pallet
Both the material used to create the pallet and the size of the pallet are important factors. Pallets should not be made of smooth materials, since they allow the freight to slip around. Instead, choose a pallet that is made of wood that will reduce the amount of slippage that can occur. A standard pallet can usually hold about 4,600 pounds, but check the weight of your shipment and make sure the pallet you choose is up the job of holding it. The pallet you use should also be big enough to allow the fork of the forklift to enter unobstructed on all four sides of the pallet.
Not Securing the Shipment
Your freight needs to be as secure and stable on the pallet as possible to reduce the chances of damages to the shipment. Always pack the heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on the top. If you decide to shrink wrap your shipment, it should be wrapped multiple times from top to bottom, until it can be moved as a single unit. Place all necessary labels on the outside of the shipment. When you use straps, be sure to ratchet them as tightly as possible, and if the shipment is fragile, put crush cones on top to warn the transit team.
