Key for Garage: Amazon’s Latest Delivery Service

A constant problem plaguing the shipping and delivery industry is ensuring that packages that are delivered when customers aren’t home don’t get stolen. The theft of packages has become a serious issue that’s affected communities across the country, so Amazon devised a solution to address some of the problems: Key for Garage. Key for Garage is an alternative version of the Key for Home and Key for Car services that the company already offers in an attempt to keep packages secure. Here’s what you need to know.

Alternative to Key for Home

Amazon launched Key for Home in order to allow delivery drivers to put packages inside a home rather than leaving them by the front door, where they are prone to theft. However, consumers had multiple issues with the Key for Home process. Some people didn’t want strangers to be able to access their home for any reason, while others had problems letting drivers in because of alarms or dogs in the house.

Key for Car is a similar program that allows drivers to put packages in cars. This delivery method is more popular but has its flaws. The package is still visible inside the car, and when no one is home to receive a delivery, there is a good chance that they are out in their cars.

Key for Garage Usage

Key for Garage requires a Chamberlain or Liftmaster myQ garage door, or users can purchase a hub to attach to their existing door. When delivery drivers arrive, Amazon authenticates their information before allowing the door to open. Once drivers place the delivery inside the garage, they will wait for the door to close before moving on. Key for Garage launches in 2019 in 37 cities. Amazon hopes that customers will feel more confident about providing access to their garages than their homes.
