Keep reading and explore the strange history of the Mystery Castle.

How the Castle Came to Be

You can find the Mystery Castle in Phoenix, Arizona, where it has stood since the 1930s. Boyce Luther Gulley was the man behind the creation, and he built the castle for his daughter, Mary Lou. It was only when Mr. Gulley found out that he had tuberculosis that he moved to Phoenix from Seattle and set to work on the castle for his daughter, and it was after his death in 1945 that Mary Lou and her mother found out that they had inherited it. He built the castle out of whatever he could find or purchase for a low price. His daughter and her mother moved into the castle once they learned of the inheritance.

Unexpected Components

Gulley used a wide range of materials to construct Mystery Castle, and many were not the ones you’d usually associate with construction. In addition to mortar, cement, and stone, he used materials like telephone poles, car parts, railroad tracks, and even goat milk.
