Marveling at Arizona’s Crowning Jewel, the Grand Canyon

Arizona is famously nicknamed “The Grand Canyon State,” and this nickname is given with good reason. While there are a number of incredible geological features throughout the state, the Grand Canyon is far and away the most impressive, spanning about 277 miles and reaching depths of over a mile. It’s fair to say that the Grand Canyon is kind of a big deal in Arizona, and it is one of the most popular attractions that the state has to offer.

Grand Canyon by the Numbers

Though the origins of the Grand Canyon are hotly debated in the geological community, there is evidence that the canyon was formed over the past 40 million years as part of the Colorado River basin. It was about 17 million years ago that the Colorado River established its course through the canyon. In the 277 mile canyon, there are areas ranging from 4-18 miles in width. There are three distinctive layers of rock in the canyon, which reveal billions of years of geological history, during which the region was covered in shallow seas, swamps, and near-shore environments.

Points of Interest

The Grand Canyon is generally divided into two regions, the North Rim and the South Rim. The South Rim is much more frequently visited and built up for tourists with a number of historic buildings. Because of the higher elevation at the North Rim, this area is closed off from public access throughout the winter season. Inside the canyon, adventurous individuals may raft or explore the canyon by foot. The canyon is also accessible on mule back or by boat from upriver. Arial views are achievable by helicopter or at the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk on Hualapai lands in the western canyon.
