Like they did in most of North America, dinosaurs once roamed the deserts of Arizona. Of course, a lot of things have happened since then, like gold mining, the Wild West, and Route 66, which are all things that Arizona towns are better known for than dinosaurs. It took about 225 million years, but the Northern Arizona town of Holbrook finally rediscovered their prehistoric past and embraced the dinosaurs that once freely roamed their streets: after all, dinosaurs are just plain interesting to those of us living in the present day!

Holbrook Has Dinosaurs?

225 million years ago, the part of Arizona that Holbrook is now in was covered with dinosaurs of all kinds. So it’s not surprising that there’s been quite a few paleontological finds in the area, including the enigmatic “Gertie” dinosaur skeleton discovered in 1984. Of course, it’s easier to simply make your own dinosaur than discover a brand new species, so when Gertie was discovered, the whole town caught dino fever and started putting dinosaurs all over the place. These days, Holbrook has a bit of a reputation as a dinosaur-filled oasis in the Arizona desert.

Notable Holbrook Dinosaurs

The dinosaur park features 14 concrete dinosaurs, and is closely associated with the nearby petrified forest. Seven dinosaurs guard Holbrook’s rainbow rock shop, and dinosaur t-shirts are a hot item. Finally, three green dinosaurs (come on, what other color could they be?) stand at a tourist stop 15 miles outside of town, demonstrating that dinosaur fever is contagious enough to escape the city limits (Look out, Phoenix!) The shop has even coaxed Jerry Seinfeld and other notables into stopping by while driving through.
