A Look at Kroger’s Automated Grocery Delivery Program in Arizona

Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., has introduced an automated grocery delivery service. The service, which is being provided in partnership with startup robotics company Nuro, launched its pilot program in Scottsdale, Arizona, in August 2018. The purpose of the program was to determine how effective unmanned vehicles were in grocery delivery. Here is what you need to know about this innovative program.

The delivery program allows customers to order groceries from home.

The way that the program works is relatively simple. Customers use a mobile app or go onto the Fry’s Food Stores website to select and order the groceries they want. Nuro’s unmanned delivery vehicles will then transport the groceries to customers at home. Customers can choose to have the groceries delivered either that same day or the next day. The service costs $5.95 a week, and there is no minimum that customers must purchase.

The delivery program is likely to expand to other areas in the future.

The Scottsdale pilot program ended in March, and customers were transferred to a different delivery program that Kroger already offered, which does not use unmanned vehicles. However, the program may be introduced to other parts of the country in the future. Unmanned vehicles have tremendous potential for offering improved efficiency and convenience to customers, and the trend of using them in delivery programs of all types is likely to continue.
